BEACON, NEW YORK

Also situated on the east shore of the Hudson, Beacon is just over an hour drive from Manhattan, but offers a much different atmosphere than the City that Never Sleeps.

Beacon boasts a population of just under 16,000, and was the longtime home of famous folk singer Pete Seeger; Seeger’s environmental advocacy for Beacon, as well as recent pushes by residents to invigorate the art and recreation scenes, have helped make it an absolute haven for Manhattanites, Brooklynites and other New Yorkers looking for a change of pace. In recent years, this diamond on the Hudson River shore has been polished, rejuvenated and regained much of its historical charm.

GOVERNOR’S ISLAND

A spot literally dedicated to helping New Yorkers get away, Governor’s Island is the closest on our list in the vicinity to the Big Apple, located just 800 yards from lower Manhattan.

Governor’s Island is an easy option for a day escape because it’s so close; it still manages, however, to provide a distinct change of pace from the craziness of the city, with its open spaces, natural features, and community-like feel.
