BEST HOLIDAY EVENTS

BANK OF AMERICA WINTER VILLAGE AT BRYANT PARK

Finding an amazing free event is always a plus in a city like New York. Luckily, this holiday season features a host of free events, including the Winter Village at Bryant Park. The Winter Village is winter wonderland, with lights, dĂ©cor and a holiday-infused atmosphere. They have a huge ice rink perfect for skating, but you will have to shell out some money to rent skates if you don’t have your own.

Once you’ve had your fill of gliding around the ice, head over to the Winter Village’s restaurant, Celsius, and warm up with a holiday beverage.

GEORGE BALANCHINE’S THE NUTCRACKER AT THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET

This is one Christmas tradition that many families have been upholding for generations. With a huge cast and one of the best known collections of music in history (thanks to Tchaikovsky), the Nutcracker has become a New York City experience nearly synonymous with celebrating the holidays. With the expansive production line of over 90 dancers, over 60 musicians and two casts of 50 rising stars from the American Ballet, your experience of the Nutcracker at the New York City Ballet is sure to be memorable.

GINGERBREAD LANE

If you have children, this spectacle in Corona Park will be especially enjoyable. Over 500 pounds of gingerbread dough and 1,000 pounds of icing were utilized in the making of this giant gingerbread village. From the immense detail on the houses to the sheer expansiveness of the display, your children will marvel at the holiday-themed village. If you want to return to Corona Park on January 12, you might get the chance to snag some of the gingerbread for eating, as they dismantle and give away the pieces of the village.

ASTORIA HOLIDAY MARKET

For the Sundays immediately preceding Christmas, you can head down to the Astoria Market for holiday-themed arts, crafts and homemade goods. The Astoria Market has been known for some time as a great destination for viewing and purchasing items from some of the most talented New York-based artists and artisans, including bakers, crafters and visual artists. The Market is held in the legendary, Queens-based Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden, offering food and drink when you’re finishing perusing the market.

TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA AT THE NASSAU COLISEUM

Attending a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show is another yearly tradition many families uphold. Not only is the show spectacular in its production values and the talent of its musicians, it brings out the Christmas spirit like no other live show can. TSO will be performing in Uniondale, New York on Thursday, December 18 at 8:00 pm. They’ll be performing their new “Christmas Attic” special as part of their 2014 holiday tour.

We hope our suggestions will help you along your path to planning the perfect New York City outing this holiday season. From holiday markets to live shows to ice skating in a holiday wonderland, New York City has something for every family and every couple looking to make memories.
