JFK AIRPORT GUIDE
JFK is one of the busiest airports in the country, and if you’re flying out of Long Island, it’s probably your most-used option. Six terminals, dozens of airlines, and millions of passengers every year it can be a lot if you don’t know what to expect. This guide covers everything you need to get there smoothly, from which terminal your airline uses to how much parking will actually cost you.
Terminal-by-Terminal Breakdown
JFK has six active terminals, and knowing which one is yours before you leave the house saves real time at the curb.
Terminal 1 handles several international carriers, including Lufthansa, Korean Air, Air France, and Japan Airlines. It’s one of the older terminals, but manageable once you know the layout.
Terminal 2 is currently closed for redevelopment as part of JFK’s long-term renovation project.
Terminal 4 is the largest and most active. Delta operates its main hub here, along with Emirates, Virgin Atlantic, JetBlue international flights, and other international carriers. Arrivals and departures move fast here, so having a driver who knows the pickup flow matters.
Terminal 5 is JetBlue’s home for domestic flights. It’s one of the more modern terminals at JFK with a solid food and retail setup if you have time before your gate.
Terminal 7 handles British Airways and a handful of other international carriers. It’s at the far end of the airport loop, so factor that into your pickup timing.
Terminal 8 is American Airlines territory both domestic and international. It’s also where Alaska Airlines operates. This terminal went through a major renovation, and the curb layout has changed, so first-timers sometimes get turned around near the Arrivals area.
One note for anyone being picked up: JFK’s Cell Phone Lot is off the Van Wyck Expressway just before the airport entrance. Drivers wait there until the passenger’s bags are collected and they’re ready at the curb. It’s far more efficient than circling.
Ground Transportation: What Actually Makes Sense
You have a few options for getting to and from JFK. Here’s how they compare honestly.
Private car service is the most consistent option for Long Island travelers. Flat-rate pricing means no surge pricing on Monday mornings or holiday weekends. Your driver tracks your flight in real time, so if your arrival shifts by 40 minutes, the pickup adjusts automatically. For airport trips where timing is non-negotiable, this is what eliminates the anxiety. Our JFK airport car service covers all six terminals with meet-and-greet options on arrival.
Taxis are metered from JFK into Manhattan (flat rate of around $70 before tolls and tip), but rides back to Long Island vary. You’ll pay for distance, traffic, and whatever the meter adds. There’s also the question of vehicle condition and driver familiarity with your destination.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) tends to work well when demand is low. During peak times early morning flights, Friday afternoon departures, holiday travel surge pricing can push fares well above the cost of a flat-rate car service. Wait times at JFK’s rideshare pickup areas can also be unpredictable, especially at Terminals 4 and 8 during busy periods.
AirTrain + LIRR is worth knowing about if you’re heading into Manhattan and traveling light. The AirTrain connects all terminals to Jamaica Station, where you can catch the Long Island Rail Road into Penn Station. The combined trip runs around $15–20, depending on your LIRR zone, and usually takes 45–60 minutes to Midtown. For Long Island travelers going into the city, it’s efficient. For returning home to Suffolk County late at night, it’s a different calculation entirely.
Drive Times from Key Long Island Towns
These are realistic estimates under normal traffic conditions. Rush hour on the Van Wyck or Belt Parkway can add significant time plan accordingly, especially for early morning flights.
- West Babylon to JFK: approximately 45–55 minutes via Southern State Parkway to Belt Parkway
- Huntington to JFK: approximately 55–70 minutes via Route 110 to the LIE
- Massapequa to JFK: approximately 40–50 minutes via Sunrise Highway to Belt Parkway
- Hauppauge to JFK: approximately 55–65 minutes via LIE
- Bay Shore to JFK: approximately 50–60 minutes via Southern State Parkway
Add 20–30 minutes during weekday morning rush (7–9 AM) or evening rush (4–7 PM). For 6 AM flights, departing by 4 AM from western Suffolk towns is a safe rule.
Parking Costs and Alternatives
JFK parking adds up quickly for anything beyond a day trip.
The airport’s short-term garages charge $6–8 per 30 minutes, with a daily maximum of $40–50, depending on the lot. Long-term parking (Lot 9 and the economy shuttle lots) averages $18–28 per day. A five-day trip can easily run $100–140 before you factor in the shuttle ride to the terminal.
Off-site lots near the airport typically offer better daily rates, often $12–18/day, with free shuttle service, but the trade-off is an extra transfer and variable shuttle timing.
For most Long Island travelers, a round-trip car service costs the same or less than a week of parking, with none of the logistics. You leave from your driveway, arrive at the curb, and your driver handles the rest. On the return, your car is waiting when you land.
TSA PreCheck and Security Tips
If you fly more than 2 or 3 times a year, TSA PreCheck is worth the $85 enrollment fee for a 5-year membership. PreCheck lanes at JFK are consistently shorter, and you don’t have to remove shoes, laptops, or liquids. Enrollment is done at a nearby enrollment center there are several in Nassau and Suffolk County.
A few other things frequent JFK travelers know:
Arrive at least 2.5 hours before an international flight and 90 minutes before a domestic flight. TSA wait times at JFK can swing widely depending on the terminal and time of day. Terminal 4 during peak travel seasons can back up significantly.
Global Entry is worth considering if you fly internationally. It includes PreCheck and gets you through customs considerably faster on arrival.
TSA PreCheck is tied to your Known Traveler Number make sure it’s added to every booking, not just your frequent flyer account.
